Munich’s Bayerische Staatsoper (‘Bavarian State Opera) ranks among a handful of Europe’s foremost opera companies. For the summer of 2027, the traditionally star-studded Opernfestspiele (‘Opera Festival’) will be highlighted by Richard Wagner’s towering four-part tetralogy, Der Ring des Niebelungen. This will be the eagerly anticipated new production envisioned by the company’s dynamic General Music Director – Russian-born Vladimir Jurowski, who will conduct all four operas – and his chosen team of director Tobias Kratzer and set designer Rainer Sellmaier. As Munich has not staged a complete ‘Ring’ since 2012, tickets will be sold out months in advance.

The Bayerische Staatsoper has earned an enviable reputation for preserving the Wagnerian canon ever since the composer chose this city for many stagings of his music-dramas during his own lifetime. All four of our RING performances will be given in the imposing Nationaltheater with its lush interior décor, perfect acoustics, and supertitles in both English and German. (This writer was fortunate to encounter the team’s ‘Rheingold’ last summer and found it to be the most cogent and musically dramatic production he has experienced in many years.)

This Tour includes the rare opportunity of visiting the Richard Strauss Villa in the village of Garmisch-Partenkirchen in the Bavarian Alps, our first return to the private Villa since 2003. And an evening of Beethoven’s Chamber Music will take us into Munich’s exquisite Rococo Cuvilliés Theater.
