Berlin’s venerable Deutsche Oper commands an imposing site on Bismarckstrasse and has maintained an uninterrupted leading position in Berlin’s multifaceted musical scene. Our long overdue return to Berlin will be for seven nights during the ideal spring weather of early May, when the Deutsche Oper has surpassed our expectations with a thrilling program of four performances. First and foremost will be a new production of Giuseppe Verdi’s Shakespearean tragedy, Otello. Two other operas will be Richard Strauss’s shattering milestone, Salome; and Giacomo Puccini’s beloved Turandot. A 4th evening at the Deutsche Oper will offer the company’s resident Staatsballett in a revival of their popular full-length Nureyev.

A fifth performance will take us to the Berlin Staatsoper for Engelbert Humperdinck’s Königskinder (‘The King’s Children’), a rarity of German Romantic opera, featuring soprano Diana Damrau in the principal role and Christian Thielemann on the podium. On our final evening, we will attend an orchestral program of ‘Early Music’ at the Konzerthaus.

Accommodations for seven nights with an elaborate buffet breakfast at the venerable Bristol Hotel. Combining old-world appointments and personal service with renovated furnishings, the Bristol is a famous landmark and meeting place in Berlin. Located on the corner of the throbbing Kurfürstendamm adjacent to the city’s prime shopping area, the hotel features an indoor swimming pool and health club. The Lobby Lounge offers off-hours wine and light fare, and the main restaurant emphasizes menu surprises as well as traditional beef tartare and Wiener schnitzel.
