La Scala is closer to a cathedral than an auditorium. . . It looms as a symbol – both for the performer who dreams of singing here and for the opera buff who knows every note.” (Fodor)

Milan’s famous Teatro alla Scala ranks among a handful of Europe’s foremost opera companies. The multi-tiered theatre is at the top of every opera aficionado’s wish list, due to La Scala’s illustrious history, the exceptional acoustics, and the classic interior design. Now with the Australian conductor Simone Young and the Scottish director Sir David McVicar in charge, La Scala’s New Production of Richard Wagner’s towering Der Ring des Niebelungen will be staged in March of 2026 during a concise period of six nights. Together with Hannah Postlethwaite, McVicar is also credited with the contemporary scenic designs.  We are fortunate to have secured twenty orchestra tickets for our week-long visit to the Lombardian capital of Milano.

The international cast is headed by a trio of brilliant Wagnerian interpreters: Finland’s radiant soprano Camilla Nylund as Brünnhilde; German heldentenor Klaus Florian Vogt in a ‘tour-de-force’ assignment as both Siegmund and Siegfried; and Germany’s foremost bass/baritone Michael Volle as Wotan/The Wanderer. (Remaining cast TBA). The four operas will be sung in German with English surtitles.
