“Cecilia Bartoli is in sensational
form for landmark performances of operatic arias by Mozart and
Haydn. She joins Nikolaus Harnoncourt
. . .”
-- Opera, CD review, July ’03
“Kent Nagano has charisma,
knowledge and a very big background.”
-- Placido Domingo, announcing Nagano’s appointment as Principal
Conductor of L.A. Opera
“In
any discussion of today’s leading lieder baritones, Matthias
Goerne offers a logical starting point. Goerne’s
dark, vibrant timbre is certainly among the most intrinsically
appealing.”
-- Opera News, August ’03
“Of Christine Schäfer’s
commitment too there can be no doubt. . . And then there is the
extraordinary vocal interpretation. . . There is not a single
cliché on show.”
-- ‘La Traviata’, Berlin Staatsoper, Opera, July ’03
Murray Perahia: “Here is an
artist who has irrefutably reached the pinnacle of his interpretive
powers.”
-- Ted Sheen, Metromix Chicago
“Among the leading pianists, few can be depended on to perform
the canonic repertory with such satisfying integrity, season after
season, as Andras Schiff.”

Salzburg’s
prestigious winter ‘Mozartwoche’
attracts the musical elite of Europe for a remarkable series of
concerts and opera during the uncrowded winter period of late
January. Restaurants, shops and museums are refreshingly free
of tourists, and the majestic Tyrolean landscapes are often enhanced
by sparkling snow-capped mountains. The programs are always heavily
weighted towards the orchestral and chamber music of Salzburg’s
adopted native son Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart,
but recent years have seen the expansion of the Festival’s
repertory into the Romantic works of Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms
and others. In response to the unanimous enthusiasm of last year’s
visit, Great Performance Tours is pleased to offer a return to
this unique winter festival in early 2004, and the program is
so exciting that we will remain in Salzburg for a relaxed period
of six nights instead of combining
a second city. We do not want to miss any of the performances
that have been announced.
First, we have carefully chosen our dates to include two
concerts in the Large Festival Hall by the revered Vienna
Philharmonic. The eminent German conductor Nikolaus
Harnoncourt has announced an all-Mozart program showcasing
the irrepressible Italian mezzo-soprano Cecilia
Bartoli in four virtuoso arias; and Maestro Kent
Nagano, recently named Principal Conductor of the Los Angeles
Opera, will be the conductor for a varied evening of works by
Henri Dutilleux, Mozart and Tchaikovsky. Second, a pair of concerts
by the Camerata Salzburg will be
heard in the Large Festival Hall
and the intimate Baroque jewel of the Salzburg
Mozarteum. The peerless American pianist Murray Perahia
will be the conductor and soloist for a classical program of Bach,
Mozart and Haydn in the Large Hall, while the Camerata’s
Music Director Sir Roger Norrington
will be on the Mozarteum podium for a ‘Mostly Mozart’
evening featuring Austrian violinist Thomas
Zehetmair. Additional concerts which no music-lover would
want to miss include the charismatic Hungarian pianist Andras
Schiff in a morning program of three Mozart piano concerti;
the Chamber Orchestra of Europe performing
a varied program of Mozart, Sibelius and Stravinsky; the refined
German singers Christine Schäfer
and Matthias Goerne paired in an
evening of vocal works by Mozart and Gluck; and one of the Festival’s
signature morning concerts of the Mozarteum
Orchester Salzburg starring the dazzling Latvian cellist
Mischa Maisky in a combination of
Mozart and Haydn.
This plethora of eight performances
by several of the greatest conductors of our time should prove
irresistible to old and new friends. The incomparable Sacher
Salzburg Hotel will provide a luxurious and welcoming backdrop
for an idyllic winter holiday in Europe’s most beautiful
small city.

buffet breakfast) at the Sacher Salzburg
Hotel, formerly the Österreichischer
Hof, conveniently located along the Salzach River in the
heart of the Festival’s activities. The Sacher Salzburg
boasts the finest rooms and cuisine to be found in Salzburg and
is in great demand at all times of the year. It is quite simply
among a handful of our favorite hotels in Europe. (Please
note that there will be a performance on our first evening. We
have been able to secure a few rooms for the night of January
25th if you prefer to arrive a day early to adjust to the time
change.)
*This price includes all eight performances.

a few of our travelers may have to be upgraded into twin rooms
for single occupancy at an additional cost. Please indicate if
you PREFER this large type of occupancy.
***We strongly urge you to make your air reservations EARLY to

excellent in all Salzburg theatres. Exact ticket locations are
