TWO NEW YORK WEEKENDS
1. New York Winter Weekend (Jan 22 - Jan 25)
2. New York Opera Weekend (Mar 12 - Mar 15)
|
|
Our programs in New York during the
first half of the new year (2003) will include Two
Long Weekends with the most sought-after performances
at Lincoln Center and on Broadway. All performances at the
MET Opera are sung in the original language and benefit from
the enormously popular MET Titles.
 |
First,
our Winter Weekend in January will combine
the MET’s pairing of a new production of Janacek’s
searing melodrama Jenufa (starring Karita
Mattila and Deborah Polaski)
and Mozart’s immortal masterpiece Don Giovanni
(showcasing Jane Eaglen and Peter
Mattei) with a romantic evening of chamber music
on the Brooklyn Barge and confirmed
top-price tickets for Broadway’s sought-after
musical comedy The Producers. ‘The
Producers’ has received more Tony Awards than any
production in Broadway’s history. |
Second, an exciting March
Weekend will include three of the MET’s highlights
of the ’02 – ’03 season. First, the grandiose
new production of Hector Berlioz’ towering Les
Troyens with Deborah Voigt, Ben
Heppner and Dwayne Croft promises
to be a fitting celebration of the Bi-Centennial of the composer’s
birth in 1803. Second, a long overdue revival of Gounod’s
French landmark Faust will mark the return
to the MET of opera’s brightest married stars Angela
Gheorghiu and Roberto Alagna.

Stephen
Sondheim's "A Little Night Music" |
And third, Verdi’s Shakespearean
tragedy Otello will be conducted by the charismatic
Russian maestro Valery Gergiev with a thrilling
trio of principals including Barbara Frittoli,
Vladimir Galouzine and Nikolai Putilin.
Our fourth performance in March will be the New York
City Opera’s production of Stephen Sondheim’s
comedy A Little Night Music, in the wake
of widespread national recognition of the composer’s
70th birthday |
