CHICAGO MUSICAL WEEKEND
March 6 - March 9, 2003
The Lyric Opera; Chigago Symphony Orchestra; Andras Schiff
Recital
|
| Many
of our repeat travelers have expressed their enthusiasm
whenever we are able to secure top-price orchestra tickets
for the revered Lyric Opera of Chicago,
where the best locations are notoriously difficult to
obtain. We are pleased to announce a weekend in early
March which will include three consecutive nights
at the Lyric, with confirmed optimum seating
for this trio of first-rate performances. |
|
| The
Lyric |
|
|
Two of the masterful works from the canon of Giuseppe
Verdi – La Traviata and
Un Ballo in Maschera – will feature today’s
leading artists in the demanding principal roles. |
| La
Traviata |
First, Italy’s newest star soprano Patrizia Ciofi
will make her eagerly awaited American debut as Violetta in
a glittering production which captures the Parisian demi-monde
of Alexandre Dumas’ novel ‘The Lady of the Camelias’.
Second, a sensational cast will spark the vocal fireworks of
‘A Masked Ball’: the consummate Chilean soprano
Veronica Villarroel as Amelia, American spinto
tenor Neil Shicoff in one of his signature
roles as Riccardo, and Russia’s matinee-idol baritone
Dmitri Hvorostovsky as the jealous husband
Renato.

The Chicago
Symphony Orchestra |
Our third opera at the Lyric will offer a complete change of
pace with George Frideric Handel’s Baroque landmark Partenope.
A remarkable Handelian ensemble will be headed by the versatile
American soprano Elizabeth Futral in the title
role and the peerless American countertenor David Daniels repeating
his mesmerizing portrayal of Arsace from the 1998 Glimmerglass
staging.
No
visit to Chicago is complete without a concert by the
renowned Chicago Symphony Orchestra,
where tickets in the
hallowed atmosphere of Orchestra Hall
are as scarce as those for the Lyric. We are fortunate
to include a sold-out subscription concert under the esteemed
Music Director Daniel Barenboim, who
has announced a program of popular works by Franz Joseph
Haydn and Richard Strauss.

The Westin Hotel |
Our busy schedule will also allow us to include a fifth
performance of the highest musical quality. On Sunday
afternoon, the Hungarian keyboard virtuoso Andras Schiff
will give a Recital in Orchestra Hall, which
will be yet another highlight of our program.
