THE BERMUDA FESTIVAL
February 26 - March 2, 2003

Great Performance Tours is gratified with the important news that the English Chamber Orchestra heads the roster of performances during the 2003 Bermuda Festival, which will be celebrating its 28th Anniversary this winter.

Over the past two and a half decades, the Festival has presented such international artists as vocalists Frederica von Stade, Jessye Norman, dance ensembles such as the Joffrey Ballet and the stars of the Bolshoi Ballet, and orchestras such as Sir Neville Marriner’s Academy of St. Martin-in-the Fields, and the renowned English Chamber Orchestra.

The four concerts will include a remarkable variety of chamber music spanning the classical and romantic eras of the 18th and 19th centuries. The Festival is to be commended for the imaginative and frankly irresistible combination of works by Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Grieg, Fauré, Sibelius, Elgar and others. This year, the English Chamber Orchestra will perform with a full complement of forty musicians instead of the reduced chamber ensemble which has formerly visited Bermuda, reflecting the expanded facilities and resonant acoustics of the new state-of-the-art Ruth Seaton James Auditorium just outside the island’s capital of Hamilton. The Recital by James Ehnos will be in the intimate and pristine City Hall Theatre designed by native son William Onions.

After a several-year hiatus, we are now pleased to offer a four-night return to Bermuda to enjoy an enticing series of three concerts by the London-based English Chamber Orchestra, which has always been greeted with particular enthusiasm in the former English colony of Bermuda. A fourth performance will be an intimate violin Recital by the young Canadian virtuoso James Ehnes.

Bermuda remains the most beautiful and captivating of the Atlantic islands, far more British and less commercial than the Bahamas and most of the Caribbean islands. The annual Festival takes place during a quiet off-season period and offers an ideal opportunity to experience the relaxed local atmosphere combined with international cultural events. For good reason, the Festival marks the high point of Bermuda’s social life.

Everyone knows that Bermuda hotel rates are generally exorbitant. However, Great Performance Tours is able to offer an exceptional value for this unusual winter vacation. Our economical package includes the superlative Stonington Beach Hotel with a full breakfast, afternoon tea and gourmet lunch or dinner every day – a far more generous inclusion of meals than we are able to offer on most of our Tours. The American dollar is accepted everywhere and is equivalent to the local Bermuda dollar. Our entertainment schedule benefits from our President Christopher Clark’s long-term experience with Bermuda’s unique charms. Above all, you will find that Americans are especially appreciated on the island and that the Festival exudes a friendly, hospitable welcome.
