Reykjavik - Icelandic Opera: May 26 - June 1, 2020
In recent years, Iceland has emerged as an intriguing destination for travelers in search of unspoiled nature and breathtaking Northern landscape. Now our first-ever Great Performance Tours program to the capital city of Reykjavik will introduce us to the thriving Icelandic Opera with a sensational all-star performance of Richard Wagner’s Die Walküre, the most lyric of his four masterful RING music-dramas. Our first visit has been inspired by the thrilling cast announced for the opera. A second musical evening will be the Wagner Society’s presentation of pianist Albert Mamriev performing works of Beethoven and Liszt/Wagner.
During our five nights at the end of May, a morning lecture on Icelandic history will emphasize the Old Norse mythology which inspired Wagner’s imagination. We will also visit the city’s foremost cultural institutions – the Reykjavik Arts Museum, the City Hall, the Nordic House.
We will take advantage of the ideal May weather for an excursion around the Golden Circle. The geological wonders of Icelandic nature include the magnificent Gullfoss waterfall, steaming geysirs and hot springs, black-sand beaches, and dramatic volcanic mountains and glaciers. There will be ample free time to enjoy daytime walks around the city center and late evening strolls when the sun barely sets during the island’s early summer.
Accommodations for five nights with a generous breakfast included at Reykjavik’s Canopy Hotel. In keeping with the predominantly modern architecture of the city, the Canopy is one of the Hilton’s newest properties and features up-to-date facilities and amenities. In addition to the Geiri Smart Restaurant, the Canopy coffee shop, and the lounge and bar area, the hotel also offers a fully-equipped fitness center. The location is convenient to the Laugavegur main shopping street.
